Wedding Reception Favor Ideas
81Ideas
I was thinking about wedding favors and I got a great idea for a local wedding reception favor idea. What do I mean by local? Use the resources that are grown or found in your community.
For instance, if you live on the beach, collect seashells and make beautiful favors for your guests out of them. Be creative.
If you live near an apple orchard in New York State, Ohio, Washington State, or elsewhere, consider giving guests fresh apples, apple butter, apple jelly, or mini apple pies. Homemade, in my opinion is best, but if you want to buy your favors from local farms or stores, go ahead. I understand about how little time a bride to be has when planning her wedding and having to work full time too.
If you live in California or Florida near citrus trees, give out lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines, tangelos, or grapefruits. Use the fresh fruit or give out jars of jelly or candied fruits. Yum.
If you are in Hawaii, consider pineapples or coconuts or products made out of them.
If you have pecan trees in Texas or other nut trees or orchards near you, give out sacks of nuts in shells. Or make a craft out of the nuts or shells and use it as a wedding reception favor idea.
Grapevines are all over the country and grapes, jams, and jellies also make wonderful local wedding favors.
Locally produced honey can be purchased from hive owners and given as a delicious wedding reception favor idea. I have heard by word of mouth and read articles about locally produced honey helping to prevent allergies, so this is not only a sweet treat, but a step toward the wellness of your wedding guests.
Perhaps your area is famous for a certain type of food or sauce. Give out bottles of hot sauce or other condiments made in your area.
Maple syrup and maple candies are wonderful if you live in or around Vermont. Fresh maple syrup and candies made from it are so delicious. When I was a little girl, my grandmother went up to Vermont for a visit and brought me some Vermont maple candy in the shape of maple leaves. Yum!
What about cactus candy if you live out in Arizona? This is incredible stuff. While driving out to California on vacation, we stopped in a local shop in a town in Arizona and had the most delicious cactus candy. Before this, I did not know there was such a thing.
Maybe wood is a big industry where you live. Give your guests something small made of wood such as tiny wooden boxes or paperweights.
There are many things that can be used as local wedding favors. With a little creativity, you can come up with the perfect idea for your wedding.
Candle Favors To Make
Votive wedding candle favors are great gifts to give to your wedding guests. They are attractive, useful, and smell good if you use scented candles. And who does not enjoy aromatherapy?
Everyone enjoys candles, either for the smell or for the soft glow they provide on a cool evening. They are romantic and make a room look inviting and warm. Candlelight also makes us look more attractive than a direct light. I enjoy using them for dinner parties and for holiday parties, especially around Christmas time. I fill the house with candles at Christmas.
Votive favors are simple to make. There are several ways to make them attractive and appealing. Below are some easy instructions to put some wedding candle favors together:
You will need a circle of white tulle sold in packages in craft stores, some 1/8" ribbon, and votive candles. Vanilla and lavender are good choices but choose the colors and scents that go with your wedding and that you prefer. Unscented candles are fine also, if you prefer. Some guests may have allergies to some strong candle scents.
Place the votive in the center of the circle of white tulle. Gather up the sides on top of the votive and secure with a length of ribbon. Tie the ribbon in a bow.
You can present this as is to your guests or string a small charm onto the ribbon before tying it. A small tag or sticker attached to the ribbon can be added with the date and the names of the bride and groom. This idea is simple, yet elegant and your guests will enjoy receiving them.
Here is a video with some more ideas that I made.
Another variation of this wedding favor is to wrap it in tissue paper instead of tulle. Put 2 small pieces of tissue paper together. Squares should be at least 8"x8".
Place the votive in the middle and gather up the sides. Twist the paper and secure with a small piece of "invisible" tape. Tie a bow with a length of ribbon about 10" long. Then open the paper above the bow into a flower. Trim the tissue paper, rounding the edges.
For a fuller-looking flower, add one or two more sheets of tissue paper.
Below is yet another video I made about making wedding favors for your guests.
Bird Seed Wedding Favors
Instead of guests throwing rice at the bride and groom, make bird seed wedding favors for your guests to throw as you leave your reception. It is good to toss wild bird seed outside to feed the birds. We all love our feathered friends.
Making them is easy. Just buy a big bag of wild bird seed at Wal-Mart or at your favorite grocery store. Below is one simple idea for making them. You will need nine-inch circles of netting, small plastic champagne glasses and 12 inch lengths of 1/8 inch ribbon in the color of your choice.
You can skip the champagne glasses and just put a few tablespoons of bird seed in the middle of the netting circles and tie those up with the ribbon or use twisty ties, wire, or small rubber bands.
Another idea is to put the bird seed into small plastic bags or printed seed envelopes and secure them. Make sure there is a seed favor at each guest's place setting or assign someone to pass them out when it is time for the bride and groom to leave. Don't give them to the children unless you are outside since they will make a mess inside with them!

A good idea for the bird seed favors is to place them all in a big basket or bag and assign some teens to pass them out to every guest when it is almost time for the bride and groom to leave the reception, explaining to the younger guests to wait until everyone goes outside to open the seeds to toss at the happy couple....not at each other!
Lavender Throw Packets
If you would like to make lavender throw packets for your wedding and you have a lot of time before the big day, consider growing your own lavender. It is not difficult.
Buy a packet of lavender seeds. Plant them in a large outdoor pot in full sun. Water frequently. When the stalks are tall and the buds are on the stalks, cut them to harvest the buds.
If you do not want to grow your own, you can get lavender stalks from your florist or nursery.
Bundle the stalks in small handfuls be securing them with a rubber band. Then hang the stalks upside down on a nail by the rubber band, in a dark, dry place. Make sure that you place a bowl or a cloth under the drying stalks to catch all of the buds as they fall off.
The drying process takes about a week. The stalks will be fully dry when you cannot feel any moisture and the stalks are not bendable without breaking. Rub the stalks from bottom to top, shaking the buds loose.
Store the buds in an airtight container until you are ready to fill your organza bags to make the packets.
You can also buy a big bag of dried lavender to use if you do not want to grow your own.
These will look pretty on the reception tables and will smell great, too. When the bride and groom leave the reception, the guests will run outside and toss the dried lavender at the bride and groom. Dried lavender is green because it is a part of nature and will not kill birds like uncooked rice will.
Lavender Sachet Wedding Favors
Consider making lavender sachet wedding favors for your guests. They smell wonderful and your guests can use them in their drawers or closets.
When I was a small girl, my grandmother taught me to make sachets and showed me how to use them. She would sew up small bags with drawstrings and we would fill the bags with scented powders or with dried flowers or herbs. Then we would place them in our dresser drawers so that our intimate clothing would smell pretty. If you are looking for an easy favor to make for your guests, this is it.
You will need some 3" x 4" organza bags and a large bag of dried lavender. Spoon in the lavender until the bag is 3/4 full. Pull the draw strings and tie to secure the sachet. Place in a drawer or hang in your clothes closet or linen closet. The smell is fresh and sweet, just like the outdoors.
The sachets can also be put out in the open. Place the sachet on a table in your living room or in your bathroom to freshen the area.
Seed Packet Wedding Favors
If you love flowers, consider giving your guests wildflower seed packet wedding favors at your wedding.
Many couples give each wedding guest a packet of wildflower seeds at the reception as a thank you for attending their wedding. Your friends and family can plant the seeds in their yards at home and when they come up, they will think of you on your wedding day.
Don't be like all of your friends and give away unhealthy candy-coated almonds. Dare to be different. Give a green favor to your guests and help them to beautify the environment with spring flowers.
My husband is an avid gardener. He grows vegetables year-round in our backyard. He also loves flowers and has planted many over the years to beautify our front and back yards. He loves them so much that his full time job is now writing his gardening website and selling seeds online.
You will need clear glass balls with removable tops where the hooks go and a variety of small bottles of acrylic paint. You can choose to use your wedding colors or the whole rainbow of holiday colors and metallic colors.
Each ball can be the same or you can make a variety. Christmas colors are so beautiful and rich. The Christmas ornament favors will be gorgeous.
rylic paints come in metallic colors of silver, gold, and copper. You can also use rich reds, greens, deep blues, and burgundies.
Some couples use black and white for their Christmas wedding colors. In this case, use black, white, and silver paint for your ornaments.
Use at least two paint colors. I think they are prettier with at least three.
Remove the lid where the hook goes from the ornament. Squeeze a small amount of one color of paint inside of the ornament.
I used clear glitter paint and red for this ornament.
Turn the ornament slowly around and around, allowing the paint to coat portions of the inside of it. Then squeeze a bit of the second color and repeat, trying to coat some of the unpainted portion of the ornament.
If you are using a third color, repeat doing the same as above. Pour out any excess paint.
Allow to dry with hole side up on newspaper. Once dry, put the piece where the hook goes back into the glass ball.
Tie a beautiful matching or contrasting length of ribbon into a loop and place a tag with a hole in it on the ribbon. The tag should have the names of the bride and groom. You can also include the date of the wedding.

Wedding Spice Ornaments
Wedding spice ornaments are great to give as favors for fall and Christmas weddings. They make wonderful gifts for your guests to put on their Christmas trees but that is not all.
They are also good to hang up in your kitchen for a cinnamon fragrance permeating the area. They will also make a pantry or a coat closet smell wonderful.
It is important to remember that these Christmas spice ornaments are not edible. I repeat, DO NOT EAT THEM!
You will need a drinking straw, foil or baking parchment, cookie sheets, cookie cutters, matching holiday ribbon in appropriate colors, tags with the bride's and groom's names on them with a hole punched in them, allspice, nutmeg, ground cloves, ginger, applesauce and a lot of cinnamon.
Choose the shape that you want to use. I use hearts and circles. If you do not have a circle cookie cutter, use a glass turned upside down to cut circles out of the dough. It works like a charm.
Let's get started. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons allspice, 2 tablespoons nutmeg, 1/4 cup ground cloves, and 2 tablespoons ginger.
Slowly mix in 2 cups of store-bought applesauce. Homemade applesauce usually turns out too thin for this dough. Just buy a cheap brand in a glass jar. The taste does not matter since no one will be eating the ornament.
Sprinkle surface and rolling pin with cinnamon and roll the dough out to 1/4" thick. Then cut with cookie cutters or glass to the desired shape. Use the drinking straw to poke a hole near the top of the ornament, where the ribbon will go after baking.
Place the dough ornaments on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 150 degrees for two to three hours, until the ornament is hard. Allow the ornaments to cool completely. Then place the ribbon and the wedding tag through the hole in the top of the wedding spice ornament and tie.
You can also make or buy small bows out of ribbon and use a glue gun to secure it to the front of the cinnamon ornament.
Feel free to add some glitter to the dough when mixing in the applesauce for some sparkle.
For Christmas weddings, use red, green, deep blue, burgundy, silver, and gold for the ribbons and glitter.
For fall or Thanksgiving, use yellows, oranges, reds, and gold for the ribbon and glitter.
Store the spice ornaments in plastic bags when not on display so the fragrance will last longer.
Package them in a small plastic or glassine bag with a small sticker that says "do not eat" or "non-edible". Plain white stickers can be purchased in sheets at craft stores and this can be handwritten.
Christmas Ornament Favors
Christmas ornament favors are easy to make and are perfect for a December wedding. You will want to start on them months in advance. Fortunately, craft stores, such as Michael's, carry the clear glass balls you will need prior to fall so you can complete them in plenty of time.
Wedding Favor Ideas From My Readers
African Violets For Favors
by Sue
(Kingston, New York)
We are planning to buy mini African Violets for favors. We bought mini clay pots and painted them in our wedding colors, lavender and white. We are getting mini lavender and white plants. We glued on a small ribbon bow to each pot. Lavender on the white pots and white on the lavender pots. I think they turned out pretty.
We will put lavender African violets in the white pots and white African violets in the lavender pots. We will give one to each adult guest. We are giving the children a small bag of candy tied with a lavender bow.
Now all we have to do is transfer the violets into the pretty pots a few days before the wedding. My bridal party is helping me with it, along with my mom who is a big plant person.
I am carrying lavender violets for my bouquet as well.
Potted Wedding Favors
by: Juanita
Sue,
I just love this idea. How creative and sweet. I am sure each guest will enjoy the flowers and think of your wedding each time they look at their potted wedding favors. I love the coordinated colors of the pots, violets, and ribbons.
Also, how smart to think of the kids and make them some candy bags.
Thanks and best wishes.
Bird Seed Packets
by Cara
(Poughkeepsie, New York)
For my sister's wedding, we made bird seed packets instead of rice to throw as the bride and groom left the church. Uncooked rice is said to hurt or kill birds so we bought some wild bird seed from Wal-Mart and put it in small white and purple organza bags, also from Wal-Mart in the crafts section..
These were placed at each place setting at the reception. They looked pretty and matched the decor. A few of the guests opened them at the table and sprinkled some bird seed, mostly kids and teens but the majority of guests gathered outside with the packets and tossed the bird seed at the couple. Good for the birds and no mess to clean up except for the bit at a few tables.
I would like to suggest placing a small sign at each table stating what the bird seed is for and not to open it until the guests are outside but other than that, this craft was simple to make, looked great and worked great, not to mention that it was so inexpensive to make!
Wedding Bird Seed
by: Juanita
This is a great idea for throwing as the bride and groom leave. Feeding birds is a good thing to do and no clean up is always a plus. Another idea is to use small plastic champagne glasses or swans as bird seed holders in place of the organza bags. These can be purchase at dollar stores such as Dollar Tree and also at Wal-Mart.
Thank you, Cara.
Candy Apple Favors
by Lynn
(Leakey, Texas)
Candy apple favors are delicious and nutritious! They can be bought already made in a variety of coatings or you can make your own. Traditional plain red candy coating the apples, or rolled and covered in coconut or chopped nuts before the candy is hard, these apples on a stick are a wonderful treat.
There are also caramel apples and chocolate apples. Again, these can be plain or rolled in sprinkles, coconut, nuts, crushed oreo cookies, just use your imagination. Who doesn't love candy apples? Just make sure they are wrapped in plastic or in a decorative wedding favor sack. Martha Stewart has some wonderful favor bags and boxes now at Michael's that I just love. I recently used them for cookie favors at a birthday party I gave for a friend and they looked so pretty.....
The candy apple favors would be appropriate for a summer wedding because when you go to an amusement park in the summer, you want a candy apple. If you live near apple orchards, this is the perfect do it yourself wedding favor. Get the whole wedding party involved in making the apples. Make a variety and put out different ones at the same table. Guests can trade with each other (as long as the apples are wrapped) so each guest gets the apple he/she wants.
There are candy apple kits available at grocery stores in the produce aisles or you can look up the recipes online or in cookbooks if you want to do it from scratch.
Candy Apple Wedding Favors
by: Juanita
Lynn, This sounds so delicious. What a great idea for a wedding -- candy apple wedding favors. Sure to be a hit with all of the guests. You may want to have some plain apples for guests who have diabetes, just in case.
What a wonderful, mouth-watering idea for a favor! Best wishes.
Coca Cola Wedding Favors
by Jan
(Marquette, MI)
How about using 12 ounce glass bottles of Coke for Coca Cola wedding favors. You can find boxes of 12 ounce bottles of Coke at Sam's and other warehouses. Then have sticky labels made up to put on each bottle with the names of the bride and groom and the wedding date. Stick the label on the Coke bottle. Tie a ribbon around the neck of the bottle. A perfect take home wedding favor for your guests.
As far as Diet Coke goes, you might want to contact the Coca Cola company and see if they make diet Coke in glass bottles. I have not seen it in stores or warehouses. It would be good to have for diabetic guests.
Glass Coca Cola Bottles
by: Juanita
My husband just came home from Afghanistan this week and we went to Sam's. He saw packs of 24 glass Coca Cola bottles there and insisted on buying some. They do make a perfect favor. Also, the bottles can be used for wedding table centerpieces with beautiful flowers if the bride and groom are coca cola fans. What a great retro idea for the table!
Thanks for the idea!
by: Lisa
My fiance and I are getting married on the Fourth of July, and I want favors that people could enjoy but also express our love of GA! Thanks for the tips on where to buy the bottles and how to personalize them at a reasonable cost!

Cookie On A Stick Wedding Favors
by Norma
(El Paso)
For something extra special for your guests, make cookie on a stick wedding favors. Go to a craft store such as Michael's or the craft department at Wal-Mart and buy some popsicle sticks or some lollipop sticks. Then either make homemade cookie dough, or to save you some time, buy those refrigerated, already mixed together batches of your favorite cookie dough.
Put them on the pan to bake and insert a stick into the large, rounded cookie. If you use smaller cookies, you will want to give each guest 2 or 3 cookies on a stick instead of one large cookie on a stick.
Make sure you wrap these either in pretty cellophane and tie with a ribbon or use premade cookie bags. Add a tag with the wedding date and the names of the bride and groom and you have the perfect wedding favors.
Cookie Wedding Favors
by: Juanita
Norma,
Thank you for the great idea of cookie wedding favors on a stick. I have made cookies on a stick. Sometimes it is difficult to get the cookie to stay on the stick while baking. The dough should be pretty thick for it to work and the stick should be inserted at least one inch into the cookie in order for it to stay during baking.
Cookie on a stick wedding favors look special wrapped and secured with a ribbon. Very pretty. Add a label with the name of the bride and groom and the wedding date and you are all set.
Fruit Wedding Favors
by Cynthia
(Dallas)
Here is a great idea for fruit wedding favors that can also double as wedding place cards. I saw it on the Martha Stewart website using pomegranites but I think any fruit with a skin or even an apple would work. Slice a slit in the top of the pomegranite or orange and place a namecard in the slit for the guest. For an apple or peach with a stem, tape the placecard on the stem. The cards should have the name of the guest and the table number of the guest.
Fruit Wedding Favors
by: Juanita
Cynthia,
Thank you for the neat idea. Martha Stewart always has the best ideas! She is a wonderful inspiration to us all. She uses pomegranates but you also suggest using citrus fruit and even apples and peaches. I guess oranges, grapefruits and even pears would work as well. They are a healthy treat for the guests and make a nice placecard and a nice favor. Of course, you can also include another favor as well but you do not have to.
I wonder if mangos would work too.
Hershey Kiss Rose Wedding Favors
by Meghan
(Ohio)
Everybody does the boring matches with their names and wedding date on them and they are not really reasonable for everybody or young kids so I figured I would find something else more unique to put my own little touch on. I made the Hershey kiss roses in which ever color matches your wedding theme and printed out my own tags to put on the stem of each one and set them at every place setting on the table, one for each person.
NEEDED:
Hershey kisses
floral wire
floral tape
single floral leaves
cellophane paper
homemade tags
DIRECTIONS:
Cut cellophane paper into squares.
Place two kisses with their flat ends together.
Wrap paper over the 2 kisses.
Stick the wire in the bottom where the paper is gathered and wrap with floral tape half way and add the leaf and continue to wrap the leaf and the other half of the stem.
Your rose should be done. Then you take the tags and put a hole in the one end and slip them up on the stem over the leaf.
So you have an elegant but cheap and fun wedding favor for each person to take home and remember!!
***Webmaster Note***
Thank you, Meghan.
If you would like to see these being made, I made a video of me making chocolate roses on my wedding chocolate favors page a while back.
Homemade Chocolate Turtle Wedding Favors
by Sandra
(Des Moines)
For my sister's wedding last year, we made homemade chocolate turtle wedding favors. We used Wilton chocolate pieces, melted them in the microwave, poured the chocolate into the rounded molds about 1/4 of the way up. Then we squirted in a small amount of caramel that you put on ice cream. Make sure you add just a tiny amount or the caramel will leak out of the side of the candy.
We added a pecan half on top of the caramel and then poured more melted chocolate on top of the pecan to the top of the mold.
They hardened in the fridge and then we made enough for each guest to have 4 homemade chocolate turtle wedding favors.
We filled small boxes from Michael's with the 4 chocolates and topped them with tiny bows in her wedding colors. Light blue and light green. They looked too pretty to eat. We added a label that said "handmade by Sara and Justin, April 2007.
We had the whole family working together to make the turtles and pack them. We got a lot of compliments from the guests. The candies were delicious.
Homemade Chocolate Turtles
by: Juanita
Sandra,
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe for homemade chocolate turtles! Yum! They sound delicious and I can't wait to try them. I have the Wilton candy molds in several shapes and I have made some chocolates but not turtles. I love them so they will be delicious. What a great way for the bride and groom to show each guest how special he/she is to them! I am sure a lot of time and love went into each candy. This is a great way to involve the whole family.
Theater Popcorn Favor
by Carrie
(Fort Hood, TX)
I have a great idea for a wedding gift for your guests--a theater popcorn favor. Go to a store like Party City and buy some small red and white striped bags that look like movie popcorn containers. Most party stores have a movie theme section. Fill these with unpopped popcorn, tie with a bow, and voila, a delicious movie treat that your guests can take home later.
You could have a whole movie theme reception, showing old black and white movies or Father of the Bride with Steve Martin or the old one with Elizabeth Taylor. Have the movie playing in one section of the reception hall, not too loudly. Hang movie posters with wedding themes. Have an old-fashioned movie popcorn cart and pop corn on the premises for your guests.
Theater Popcorn Bags
by: Juanita
Carrie,
Great suggestion for a different reception! I was in Dollar Tree this evening and there, in the snack aisle, they have packages of 10 red and white striped theater popcorn bags for $1. They may be in other dollar stores as well. So these could be bought up and stored for your wedding. The problem with dollar stores is that they get close out items so what is there one day is gone the next. When you find something you like, buy as much of it as you will need because the next time you go, it will most likely be gone. Been there, done that over and over.
We Did Mini Spice Kits Wedding Favors
by Dell Cove Spice Co.
(Los Angeles)
We actually do mini spice kits with recipes — and BBQ spice blends — for favors that seem to be pretty popular. It was inspired by our own wedding. My husband and I are foodies, so the food at the wedding was really key for us. We wanted people to be able to enjoy their memories of the reception — and all the delicious treats — at home later, so we mixed up some of our favor BBQ dry rubs and had them in these cute packages, with recipes and ingredients on the back of the gift tags. It was a huge hit!

Nice idea. Thanks.

Wedding Favor Cookies
by Michelle
(San Francisco)
We are planning to make wedding favor cookies for our guests. Large white chocolate macadamia nut cookies to be exact. My fiance and I are going to do this a week prior to the wedding. We will put 2 in each cellophane bag and tie it with a peach colored ribbon attached to a tag that reads "Kevin and Michelle" and our wedding date.
My colors are peach and cream and we are planning a March wedding so it will be perfect for spring. We are excited about it and chose white chocolate macadamia nut cookies as that is our favorite cookie. We are having 60 guests so I don't think this will be too much to do. If so, we will have my mom and sister pitch in.
Wedding Cookies
by: Juanita
Michelle,
Thank you for sharing that with us. What a great idea for favors. I wish we had done that at our wedding. It is so neat that your fiance is willing to help you with this. My husband would not do anything at all with the wedding plans. He would just say, "whatever you want is fine."
And peach and cream colors sound great. Best wishes on the cookie making and on your wedding and marriage.
Wedding Favor Popcorn Balls
by Linda
(San Antonio)
I have a great idea. Wedding favor popcorn balls!
Pop a big batch of popcorn. Put 8 cups of popped corn into a huge bowl.
Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, 1/2 cup light corn syrup, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a saucepan. Cook over medium to high heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture simmers. Then pour the mixture over the bowl of popcorn and stir with a wooden spoon until well-coated. Spray Pam on both of your hands and shape popcorn into balls about 2.5 to 3 inches around. Place on waxed paper to cool. Then wrap in plastic and tie with a colorful ribbon.
Wedding favor popcorn balls are a perfect treat for your guests.
Popcorn Ball Favors
by: Juanita
Yum! Linda, popcorn ball favors are a fabulous idea as a wedding favor. I used to love to eat these at Halloween and Christmas.
A great idea would be to wrap them in cellophane in the colors of your wedding with a label giving the names of the bride and groom and the wedding date!
Thanks and best wishes.
Wine Labels!
by Allison Turner
(Mountain View, CA, USA)
I found a company making personalized wine labels with the bride and groom's picture on them, and they looked so cool I wanted to make some of my own so I did! You can print them on a computer or draw them yourself. They looked great. No pics yet, I'll try and figure out how to upload them soon!
Upload Labels For Weddings
by: Juanita
Allison,
Thank you for finding this site for us to upload labels for weddings! What a nice idea to put photos of the bride and groom on bottles. I am sure it will come in handy for many brides looking to make favors and keepsakes for their weddings.
