Do It Yourself Wedding Decorations

You can save a lot of money by making do it yourself wedding decorations. They are much easier than you would think to make. I don't do difficult and the ideas in this section are all things I can do.

Your wedding reception tables will look lovely with candles or candle holders that you have made yourself. Here are some candle ideas. Your guests will enjoy taking home a wedding favor that you and your fiance crafted by hand. Here are a few great ideas for you to try. You will enjoy displaying one of your wedding invitations in your home after you have framed it decoratively.

This craft also makes a wonderful wedding gift for the bride and groom. I made one for my husband's niece and gave it to her for a wedding gift. She loved it.

With the addition of some seashells, glitter, artificial flowers, ribbon, paint, and glue, you will be amazed at how you can spruce up plain items and turn them into do it yourself wedding decorations. Purchase a glue gun. You can find them dirt cheap at dollar stores and at Wal-Mart. I own 3. Craft markers, bits of paper, sequins, sea glass, card stock, feathers, scissors, stamps, ink, tape, and colored and white glue sticks should be kept in your craft drawer, ready to use for any occasion.

Do it yourself wedding decorations can range from tying simple bows to put on the pews in your church to making flower arrangements, bouquets, centerpieces, and boutonnieres. Have fun with it.

Get your whole wedding party involved and have a crafting party. Spark your creativity by looking through wedding magazines for great ideas. Get your mom and your future mother-in-law to help, maybe your grandmothers and aunts as well. Some of them may be very creative and helpful. My grandmothers both did some beautiful needlework.

Put in a good wedding movie while you make beautiful items for your wedding and reception. How about The Wedding Singer or Father Of The Bride with Steve Martin? Or how about the original Father Of The Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor? There is always The Wedding Planner or Bride Wars with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. There are some great wedding ideas to inspire you in each of these movies and they are so much fun to watch.

Ready, set, CRAFT!

Wedding Ceremony Decorations

Wedding ceremony decorations will make your church or other wedding ceremony venue look festive. You can make many of them yourself.

Pew Decoration Idea #1

How about decorating the ends of the pews with bows? Buy three-inch ribbon in one or more of your wedding colors. Cut three foot lengths of ribbon and tie giant bows. Add a 12-inch length of ribbon tied around the center of the bow and glue the ends together by putting one end on top of the other. Put this portion of ribbon over the end of the pew to attach the bow to it. Curl the ends of the bow with scissors if you desire.

Pew Decoration Idea #2

Instead of bows, you can decorate the ends of the pews with fresh or silk flowers in holders. Buy large card stock in the color of your choice. Place a large dinner plate on a piece of card stock. Trace the plate with a pencil. Cut out the circle. Roll the circle into a cone. One end should be narrow and the other wide. Using your hot glue gun, glue the ends of the cone together. Staple both ends of a 12-inch length of ribbon to the back of the wide portion of the cone. This will slip over the top of the pew, holding the cone in place.

Put fresh or silk flowers into the cone shortly before the start of the wedding. These wedding ceremony decorations will brighten the church. You can add lengths of ribbon and/or lace to the cones to make them look even lovelier.

Pew Decoration Idea #3

Another idea is to take a circle of tulle. Then glue two 12-inch lengths of ribbons side by side in the middle of the circle on each side of the flower. Glue a silk flower right in the middle of the two ribbons. You can leave the ribbons straight or curl them with scissors for added flare.

Cheap Wedding Chair Covers

One of the easiest ways to dress up your reception is to make cheap wedding chair covers. You can actually rent beautiful chair covers in a variety of colors that look great, but they cost a lot. If this is not in your budget, you can purchase some decorations and fix up the chairs yourself.

You will need a six foot length of tulle per chair. Tulle is that sheer, barely there fabric, similar to netting, but the holes are tinier, that is at so many wedding receptions. The great thing about tulle is that it comes in a variety of pretty colors suitable for any wedding and it makes everything it touches look magical.

I checked at Wal-Mart today and they are selling bolts of 60" tulle in a variety of colors. Most colors are $1.17 a yard, with some of the whites, ivory, and lighter colors dirt cheap at only 97 cents per yard! Can you believe that?

Wrap the tulle around the chair back and tightly tie it in a double knot. Then tie a big bow on the back of the chair. After tying, arrange the tulle so the entire chair back is covered. This looks very pretty as is or you can add some flowers to the chair with a ribbon or a flower holder.
Instead of tulle, you can make cheap wedding chair covers using very wide ribbon tied around the chair back in the same fashion as the tulle above.

For a hanging flower decoration that you put on one side of each chair back, roll a piece of decorated paper into a cone and tape. Poke two holes into the top of the cone, about 1/2 inch down from the top halfway across the cone from each other. Insert a 12 inch length of thin ribbon into one hole and tie in place. Insert the other end of the ribbon in the second hole and tie it as well. Just don't pull the ribbon too tight or the cone will tear. Then drape the ribbon over one side of the chair back and add a few flowers to each cone.

If you are having a beach or tropical-themed wedding, try draping the chair backs with colorful Hawaiian leis. They can be the plastic ones you can find at party stores or the ones made out of silk flowers. The silk flower leis cost a little more but they are very pretty.

Use Christmas garlands to wrap around the chair backs any time of the year. Just be sure that you buy enough garland while it is out at Christmastime or you won't be able to get it at a local store when you need it.
