Colleges In San Antonio
Perhaps you are moving to San Antonio to go to school. There are several colleges in San Antonio Texas for you to choose from.
There are some two year community colleges such as Alamo Community College, San Antonio College, Northwest Vista Community College, St. Philips College, and Palo Alto College.
These colleges are great for getting an Associate degree or just to save tuition while taking your basic classes and then you can transfer over to a four year college or university.
My younger son is attending Northwest Vista College. He will then transfer over to the University of Texas at San Antonio and will finish his four year degree to become a music major. My oldest son did this and is a senior now at UTSA. He saved a great deal of money by taking all of his basic classes at the community college, plus he lives at home and commutes to school which is not far from our house. This way, he has also saved on dorm fees and gas expenses.
Now let's look at all of the four year universities and colleges in San Antonio Texas:
Baptist University of the Americas
Hallmark Institute of Technology
DeVry University
Everest Institute
ITT Technical Institute
Oblate School of Theology
Our Lady of the Lake University
St. Mary's University
University of Phoenix-San Antonio
University of Texas at San Antonio
University of Texas Health Science Center
University of the Incarnate Word
Trinity University
There are also other technical schools, massage therapy schools, art, business, medical, dental, vocational and cosmetology schools in San Antonio.
If you want to be a chef, there is a school for that in Austin, Le Cordon Bleu School. My son has a friend who goes there each day. He still lives at home here in San Antonio. It takes about 60 to 90 minutes one way from San Antonio to Austin. The cost of the commute is still cheaper than if he moved into an apartment and lived in Austin, where rent is much higher than it is in San Antonio.
Northwest Vista College
Northwest Vista College is a two year college that is part of the group of five colleges called Alamo Colleges in San Antonio.
My son, Matthew, is currently a student there, majoring in music. My older son, Andrew attended this school prior to transferring to UTSA, completing his basics for a fraction of the cost.
This community college is near SeaWorld San Antonio, located at 3535 N. Ellison Drive, close to Westover Hills and Loop 1604. It is a very attractive campus, with several beautiful buildings that opened in 1995. There are approximately 15,000 students right now taking classes days, nights, and weekends.
Most of the registration and financial aid requirements can be completed online so it is very convenient.
The parking lot is almost always packed, but there is overflow parking by SeaWorld with a shuttle that runs back and forth every 15 minutes. You need a parking permit to park in both places or you will get towed. You will have to pay for the permit so take cash with you when you go to the college. One word of caution. The shuttle stops running at 7pm so if you need to be at the school past 7pm, plan to park at the school because the overflow parking is pretty far away.
There are lots of activities at Northwest Vista College for the students, along with a great cafeteria, theater for plays, and study area.
There is a bookstore with books and outer wear with the school logo for students. Books can be purchased cheaper online through Amazon and other websites.
By attending this school for the first two years of higher education, you can save a lot of money taking the basics. Then when you transfer to UTSA or one of the many other four year colleges in San Antonio, you can complete your Bachelors degree knowing that you have done it as inexpensively as possible.
UTSA aka University of Texas at San Antonio
UTSA is a good four year state university located in San Antonio, Texas. The main campus is located off I-10 at Loop 1604 on 600 acres. There are also two smaller campuses in downtown San Antonio, serving over 30,000 students of all ages and nationalities. Financial aid is accepted. Most of the enrollment and applying for financial aid can be completed online.
My oldest son is a senior there this year and parking is difficult to come by. Go early for the best parking or live on campus. The University of Texas at San Antonio gives students a choice of 133 undergraduate, 49 graduate and 22 doctoral programs. It was established back in 1970 and has grown to be one of the top schools in the area. It is much cheaper than any of the private schools in town and has a good standing in the world of education. They provide employment to 5,000 people in San Antonio so they are important to the community in this time of economic downturn. There is a large bookstore and many study areas. It is located close to Fiesta Texas, Costco, Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, and a lot of other stores and eateries. It is easy to get to if you are commuting.
The school colors are orange and white, with the addition of navy for sports activities. The school mascot is the roadrunner. The school colors were displayed proudly yesterday, September 3, 2011 as the UTSA Roadrunners played their first football game at the Alamodome and won! There are other sports such as basketball, baseball, and track and many clubs for students to join.
Housing is always full and a new dorm is expected to be completed by 2013. Did I mention that this is the largest university in the city of San Antonio? If you want a great education, you don't need to go to an expensive private school. Apply here and you will get a quality education.
UTSA Football
Yesterday, September 3, 2011, the first UTSA football game was played at the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio. I am happy to report that the game was awesome and that the UTSA Roadrunners proved to live up to their name and won!
By a score of 31 to 3, the UTSA players proved to be the fastest players and beat the pants off of Northeastern State (NSU is from Tahlequah, Oklahoma) in front of a crowd of 56,743 screaming fans, most of them from San Antonio. The UTSA band and cheerleaders were on hand for the big game. The number of fans broke a record. Prior to this game, the record attendance at a first college football game of a first-time college football program was 49,000!
For years, there has been talk about bringing football to the University of Texas at San Antonio. Yesterday's game was the culmination of years of planning and dreaming and soon, this school will be able to attract the very best and brightest football players from around the country.
n September 15, 2010, the Roadrunners had their very first practice at the Dub Farris Athletic Complex which is owned by the Northside Independent School District, the largest school district in San Antonio.
Many fans around San Antonio expected the Roadrunners to lose and to lose big. After all, it was only their first game ever. Everyone was pleasantly surprised at the big win. The mayor and many other fans Facebooked and tweeted during the game, sharing photos and impressions until the end when the team from UTSA was victorious.
For now, all home games will be played at the Alamodome. Starting on July 1, 2012 UTSA football will be a part of the Western Athletic Conference in the football bowl subdivision. Many more fans are expected to show up at the next game and fans are now starting to buy season tickets since the football team did so well.
