Civilian jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan are plentiful if you are interested. You can pick up some good money over in the Middle East. Of course, there is plenty of risk, which is why they pay you so much. My husband has worked for six different companies over in the Middle East between the First Gulf War and the current one. He worked in several towns in Iraq, Afghanistan, Dubai, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.

It used to be that the military personnel covered all of these jobs on their own. In this current war, the military is saving their personnel to actually fight the war. They are hiring civilians to do a lot of things. There are food service jobs, truck driving jobs, construction jobs, warehouse jobs, security jobs, laundry jobs, poppy eradication jobs, electrician jobs, mechanic jobs, medical jobs, and the list goes on.
So how can you get one of these danger zone jobs?
Try networking. If you know someone who has worked over there or who has just been hired, ask him or her how he or she got the job. Before my husband ever went to Iraq, one of our neighbors said her husband had just been hired to go to Iraq to make over $100,00.00 a year. At the time, my husband had just lost his job. She said he found the job on Military Hire. My husband went on there and looked and began applying.He was hired less than a week later.
If you have served in the military, you will want to go to Military Hire.com and start applying for the jobs you are qualified for and interested in. Most of the civilian contractors are ex-military.
Many people are flocking to the Middle East in wartime to make a lot of money to pay off bills and to save up for major purchases such as land, a large home, a boat, a trailer, or vacation property. Others just want a good savings account or the security of a retirement fund.
A lot of the jobs are by contract only. The contracts are usually for one year at a time. Some give you a monthly salary. Others pay you a base salary plus hazard duty pay because you are in a war zone. Many of the companies offer a contract completion bonus payable only after the year of service has been completed.
Before submitting your resume, make sure you pick out key words in the qualifications listed on the employer site. Then make sure those key words are in your resume. A computer will read your resume first and if it does not see key words in your resume, then it is filed and no human eyes see your resume.
Computer jobs tend to be the highest paying jobs. Just remember that whether you go to Iraq or Afghanistan, not to mention Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, or United Arab Emirates, you will be in the Middle East and not the United States of America, Canada, or Europe. This is a dangerous place with people who do not value human life the way we do.
One thing to watch out for is that many countries outside the United States do not have the labor laws we have. In some cases, workers have gone months without getting paid. And, there is always the chance that you will be killed or kidnapped by insurgents.
My husband has seen trucks pull in with all kinds of damage. Bullet holes through the windshield. Busted windows from rocks. Places where an RPG hit and bounced off. In one case they got a new forklift at Camp Warhorse. But the connex it was in was hit by an IED. The IED sent shrapnel into the exhaust and radiator of the forklift. It took them a month to fix it.
Contractor jobs in Iraq and any Middle Eastern country can sometimes be rough. One time something bit my husband on the leg. At the time, he just thought it was a splinter since they were working around some rough wood.
The next morning he woke up very sick, so sick he could not even get out of bed. His right leg was swollen to three times its normal size. His head was pounding. He was cold, very cold. He said he turned the heater on high and climbed under the blankets.
Even today, about every three months, he get this sickness. His leg swells up badly and it gets hot and red. I guess an Iraqi spider got him with something good.
Civilian companies working in Iraq and Afghanistan need your services desperately to provide protection for their employees and they are willing to pay for it. If you need money and you are good with a gun, these jobs are for you.
Pay for these jobs through an American company starts around $80,000 and goes up into the six-figure bracket per year if you complete your year-long contract. If you stay out of the United States for 330 days in any 365 day period, the first $80,000 you earn is tax-free.
Security jobs Iraq are usually performed on military bases. When the military moves off of the base for maneuvers and patrols, some of the security personnel go with the military, usually as part of a large convoy.
Be prepared to be miserably hot, live in a tent, and get shot at because you will be in a war zone. It seems obvious, yet so many civilians who come to Iraq and Afghanistan to work do not realize this. They come in to camp. The first attack happens within a day or two and they are on the first plane out of Iraq or Afghanistan. I have seen it happen over and over.
Before you quit your job at home to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, think long and hard about it. Make up your mind that you will not take off at the first explosion or at the first bullet that, hopefully, whizzes on by you.

Once you have obtained a danger zone job, it is time to find out what you need to take to the Middle East. Purchase some heavy duty luggage in the allowable size. Your company will let you know the size, plus get a carry-on bag and keep that with you. Put your passport and valuables in it.
If you do not have one, obtain a passport. Some companies get one for you. Others do not. Getting a passport now takes a long time in the United States.
Make sure you have a will in place before you go. This will make things easier for your loved ones if the unthinkable happens.
Write letters to the people you love expressing your feelings for them. You may never see them again. When you do see them, they will appreciate you more.
Make sure you are right with God. Many soldiers and civilians find the need for God in the midst of battle. Choose God before you get caught in that battle by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior now. Then you can comfort others who are afraid when the shooting starts, introducing them to the Savior.
Pack some books to read on the planes and while you are waiting to go from point A to point B as you travel.
Pack a Bible. Once you start hearing those bombs exploding, you will want to read the Word of God. My husband always had his Bible with him. He read it everyday and he still does.
Know your ATM Pin by the numbers, not just by the letters. In the United States, the ATM number keyboard includes letters so you can easily spell your PIN in word form. Over there, the ATM buttons have the numbers only. My husband found this out the hard way. He finally got in on the third attempt when trying to spell his word using the numbers only, but the machine kept his card. I had to order a new one from the bank and then Fed-Ex it to him. He was without a bank card or money for three weeks.
Have emergency cash on hand. On one of his trips to a new country, someone was supposed to meet him and set him up in a hotel. That person never showed up. David had to rent a car and pay for a hotel and meals before he could make contact with someone from his new company. Things don't always go as planned and when they don't, you must have a backup plan. Be prepared.

It is important to once again let all of you know that I am not a job-finding service. I merely wrote an article based on my husband's experiences working at jobs in Iraq, Afghanistan, Dubai, and Kuwait. With the withdrawal of troops, it has gotten more difficult to find a job in the Middle East with good pay. Each day, I get comments and emails from many of you across the world looking for work. I understand that times are tough and the economy is in the toilet.
After my husband returned from Afghanistan, it took him 11 months to find a job here in San Antonio, Texas. Then one year later, that company closed so he has been out of a job now for six months. He was applying for many jobs each day, including jobs overseas, but with no luck at all so things have really changed.
He finally decided to create his own job. He has built two websites to earn money and is selling seeds and garden products on Amazon. If you are having a hard time finding employment, maybe you should try creating your own job as well.
I am sorry I cannot get you a job. If I could, I would get my husband one. Business is beginning to pick up for him and perhaps it will for you as well. Sometimes, it is better to take some positive action instead of sitting around waiting for the phone to ring with a job opportunity. Good luck on creating a job for yourselves!
October 2011 Update
Good morning, readers! I continue to get comments from readers every day in the United States and all over the world who are looking for jobs in the Middle East. Once again, I am not a job service but I am allowing readers who are looking for jobs to post their contact information on this hub. As long as our country is still over there, you may as well go over and earn a good living.
If your post has any type of swearing or perverse language in it, it will not appear. Nor will I print those who are offering loans or those who want sex. Yes, I get these posts and delete them immediately. I want to caution you that I do not know anything about the comments posted below. Be careful and cautious as they may not be genuine, honest job offers or job requests. Check them out. Do not take them at face value.
I still cannot get you a job, but I have provided some links and information so you can do some research and find jobs.
The United States still has a presence in Iraq. We are still very active in Afghanistan, and now, thanks to Obama, we are in Libya, Pakistan, Uganda, and Yemen. What on earth is going on? Didn't Obama criticize President Bush during his campaign, saying he was against the war and would end it all and pull our troops home immediately? Well, he did not, but instead has made it worse.
I believe it is time to pull out of all of those countries and come home and take care of the United States' economy since it is bad and seems to be getting worse! Hopefully, the American people will wake up and realize that we need a solid Conservative in the White House to clean things up, bring our troops home, allow jobs to be created instead of stifled, repeal Obama care and put an end to our rights being stripped away.
November of 2012 cannot come soon enough so that we can put a Conservative in the White House. As a country, Christians need to pray that God will bring us the right leader for the enormous task that lies ahead, one who relies on God to guide him or her. I truly believed it would be Sarah Palin, but just a few weeks ago, she announced that she would not run for President of the United States. I am disappointed, although I understand. She could handle all of the junk that the media threw at her, but why should her children have to be ridiculed?
Herman Cain has some good ideas for taxes and for the economy. He has never been in politics so he does not think like a politician. While this is a plus, some look at it as a negative. I think his tax plan is a great idea. I am a fan of a flat tax and a national sales tax. That way all Americans can pay taxes instead of only about half of them paying them while the other half sits and collects our hard-earned money.
Michele Bachmann is an intelligent and outspoken Conservative tax attorney and Congresswoman from Minnesota who would do a great job leading this country down the right path. I would love to see her in the White House. She has said a few things that are being made fun of now so she needs to be careful before she says anything.
Rick Perry is a Christian Conservative who used to be a Democrat, but I think he is doing a good job as governor of Texas where I live. His prayer rally in August was wonderful. However, he has problems with allowing children of illegals to pay in-state college tuition. It is not going over well with the general public.
Mitt Romney is not a Conservative and the media, along with Democratic politicians love him so that rules him out for me!
Have a wonderful fall. I wish you the best on your job search. My husband gave up on trying to go back to the war zone and created his own job online. Perhaps you should consider doing something similar. Pray about it and do a lot of research. God bless you!

We are down to 2 viable candidates, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. Ron Paul is taking away votes from a legitimate candidate. His foreign policy is crazy so he is not even a consideration. Rick Santorum is a great conservative, but he is not getting enough votes. Today, Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney in Las Vegas so I guess the nominee will be Romney, which I am not pleased about. Neither candidate is conservative enough and both scare me, but Romney scares me more. Whoever gets the Republican nomination, I will support because either of them are way better than who is destroying the country now.

Hi Ashley, My husband was a soldier in the US Army but he got out before the Iraq war started. He lived on base with the soldiers and he got shot at and bombed just like they did. As a matter of fact, the civilians are there to assist the soldiers. They do many things that the soldiers used to have to do in other wars so they make their lives easier in the combat zones. No, the soldiers don't get paid that much less than many of the civilian contractors and they have a whole lot more benefits. Remember I know. I am a military wife and for 5 years straight I was without my husband while he was in Iraq and Afghanistan serving his country and making life easier for your husband and other military men and women. The soldiers are over there doing a great job, but so are the civilian contractors. Most are there because they could not find work here, just like my husband. They are away from their families, just like the military. He is too old for the military to take him back or he would have gone. It is dangerous being a civilian contractor so please get your facts straight before you go spouting off about how only your husband puts his life on the line. Mine did too and I bet yours did not serve over there for 5 years in a row.
Why dont you all try being a soldier!!!! Dont dare talk about how dangerous being a civilian contracter is. MY husband gets shot as to save you!!!!! Be a soldier, do what they do daily and then you may complain untill then get over it!!! Get a real job, a real mans job!!!!! A soldier does 50 times more than any of you and gets paid about 50 times less so dont act like your civilian jobs are so poor!!!

It is hard when your husband goes to a war zone for a year at a time, but we needed the money and he could not find a job here. I hated it but it got better as time went on, collectors got paid and quit calling, and we had some money in the bank. The hard part was trying to raise 3 preteen and teen kids. They are still somewhat bitter toward both of us because of it all. Funny thing about kids--They don't remember all of the fun family things you do or the great places you took them or the fun family game nights--they just remember the pain and how things did not always go their way. If you don't have kids, it will be much easier for your husband to go. If you do, consider praying about it and letting God lead you. The hard part about him going is that everything is on you. You have to be responsible for everything--bills, vehicles, taxes, emergencies, overdrafts because he has used his debit card and forgot to tell you when you paid the bills, family stuff, anything and everything that goes wrong. I had no family to depend on and certainly no friends to help. As a matter of fact our church family completely shut us out because they thought my husband was being awful by leaving us like that. So instead of wrapping us in their friendship and calling to see if I needed help with anything, they excluded us from any activities and would say no if I asked for help. They were total jerks and even now as I write this, I cannot believe that we stayed with that church for more than seven years and they treated us like dirt when we needed them the most. My husband used to be a pastor so we know what church friends are supposed to be like, but these church folk, deacons and pastors included, treated us like dirt as soon as my husband stepped on the plane the first time. I just wish I had left that church and found another, but my kids liked it there for a while. They finally realized that they were being treated badly as well and then we left. That was the worst part, that our supposed brothers and sisters in Christ treated us like we were piles of dung left out in the backyard by the dogs. We have been gone from there now for over 2 years and still to this day, not one of them has called to see if we are alive or to ask why we left. But I am not bitter...LOL!
Sorry....I guess I was just in a venting mood. If you have a good support system, which I thought I had, you will be fine, but if he can get a job stateside, it is better for your marriage all the way around. Pray about it before making a decision and realize that if he goes, your relationship and marriage will never be the same. You will both grow in different ways, separately, sometimes good and sometimes not so good for you as a couple so consider all of that. I am definitely not the same wife I used to be before mine went to the First Gulf War. Then years later, he went to the second for a total of five years. If I had it to do over, I would have made him stay, but he would not listen to me. He just told me he was going and it broke my heart for the first Gulf War. For the second one, I was okay with it, but he broke our kids' hearts so I had to deal with all of that.
Hi I am writing not asking for a job but how hard was it? My husband is recently out of the Airforce and just got an offer based out of TX to go near Afghanistan. He asked me if I would be ok with it if he went but I'm not sure I could stand going through all this again. I am also a conservative christian and know to depend on God but it worries me all the same. I was previously married to a man in the Army he served 38 months all together in Afghanistan. I have no way to get anyone a job. If I did, I would get my husband one. Since he has come home from Afghanistan 2 years ago, he has not been able to find another job in the Middle East or here at home. You have to look hard and sell yourself. Try to network and make contacts at the various companies. It is hard, especially now that Obama is pulling our people out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Good luck on your job searches!

Just received some new information. Agility Logistics www.agilitylogistics.com has the cooking part of the contract. They are looking for managers. Just remember, you will supervising a group of people from other countries, not the US, so their whole way of doing things is different. You will have to stay on them constantly to follow policies.

There is a company out of Switzerland called Supreme that does a lot of cooking for Americans in Afghanistan.
I had several links to companies with current jobs, but I got flagged for it so I had to take them down. I did leave one link up above that you can go to and find multiple companies who are hiring. You can also check on militaryhire.com for additional jobs. The contracts vary with time and are replaced by new companies when they expire. For instance, KBR used to have a great deal of the contracts when my husband was with them. Now they have very few in Iraq. Thanks for taking the time to read my hub.
